What will your CEO think if you gather 70 people to work on a specific problem for a whole day? Over the past two years I have worked with a project team on furthering the usage of automation at my workplace. As part of this, we went from doing physical “automation cafés”, to hosting a weekly meetup and then ultimately arranging and hosting a whole day dedicated to automation. We have received a lot of positive response for this initiative titled ‘Magic Day’ and I will be explaining the specific steps we took that I think were crucial for taking this from a good idea to an event that is widely supported in the company.

Suncorp: Making value visible – a transformation update In 2022, Suncorp shared the early stages of their transformation — moving from projects to products, and beginning the shift in ways of working across the organisation. Telenet adopted an agile-at-scale operating model across both Business and IT in 2019. Since then, the company has been on an intense learning journey, inspecting and adapting the Culture, Leadership and Operating Model in order to realize true business agility. Initially, Telenet adopted a “Spotify” model and focused heavily on Culture and Leadership changes at the team level. Despite initial enthusiasm there were many structural frictions in the system that failed to get addressed. Many teams became exasperated and the envisioned outcomes were far off. Two years later we initiated a reset of the transformation with a focus on identifying and addressing system elements that were hampering business agility. Tackling these required a paradigm shift for Telenet’s leadership. This talk is an open and authentic reflection on the stages of that journey, from someone who experienced and drove the transformation first-hand. This story presents the surprising challenges, successes, and failures we experienced in introducing the patterns of Better Value Sooner Safer Happier, experimentation and the Scientific Method into a scientific organization, where determinism and standardisation held fast to project delivery. Waters had been on an Agile Transformation (capital A, capital T), at the usual great expense, nearly a decade earlier than the starting point. The expected improvements had nnot materialised, and many influential people had become sceptical of the Agile promise. From top down the view was of wanton indiscipline and from bottom up the view was of time-and-scope boxed bureaucracy.
